Argentina Temporal Coverage Temporal characteristics of the resource. 1999-2007 Description An account of the resource El objetivo de la presente tesis es indagar sobre las formas de presentación del migrante en tres diarios argentinos (La Nación, Clarín y Página/12), durante el período 1999-2007. Nuestra investigación se focaliza en cuáles son las estrategias asociativas, imágenes y nombramientos que se despliegan alrededor de la temática migratoria, en un contexto signado por importantes sucesos y cambios económicos, políticos y sociales. Estudiamos las características del artículo periodístico, como una relación particular entre el discurso y la ideología. Estos se constituyen como “paquetes textuales”, productos de un determinado modelo de producción, distribución y consumo. Entendemos que el lenguaje es poder y por ello posee tanto un carácter performativo como la posibilidad de imponer una visión de los hechos que obtura y clausura respuestas alternativas. Estudios académicos previos sobre este tema, enfocados en la década del noventa, evidenciaron la asociación de la figura del migrante a la usurpación, la evasión impositiva, el delito, así como a la falta de respeto por las normas y costumbres de la Argentina como sociedad de acogida. La originalidad de este trabajo radica en contribuir con los estudios que posicionan el rol de los medios de comunicación en la construcción de prejuicios y estereotipos. La configuración identitaria de un nosotros encuentra allí los insumos fundamentales para la articulación de representaciones sociales, categorizaciones, orientación de las percepciones e incluso, de las sensaciones que se construyen sobre el otro. De acuerdo a lo investigado, consideramos que durante el período estudiado el discurso discriminatorio estuvo presente, pero bajo formas más sutiles que las presentadas en la década del noventa. El primer tema seleccionado aborda el tratamiento que los diarios mencionados le otorgaron a la migración latinoamericana y asiática en Argentina. Se hace énfasis en la cobertura de tres sucesos: el ataque y tortura a quinteros bolivianos ocurrido en 2000; el incendio en un taller clandestino del barrio de Flores de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires donde murieron seis personas en 2006 y el llamado “boicot a los supermercados chinos”, del mismo año. De estos casos, se desprenden construcciones discursivas que agrupan al migrante en categorías estáticas y estigmatizadas en relación con la economía y el trabajo, los lugares, la ilegalidad, las formas de asociación y las corporalidades. Para poder configurar y delinear la imagen de este sujeto, los diarios apelan a una reedición del pasado anclado en la migración europea de principios y mediados del siglo XX, así como la relevancia de las diversas formas de nombramiento, datos cuantitativos y descripciones que contribuyen a posicionar al migrante en un lugar discursivo unificado y unificante. El segundo tema estudiado se focaliza en la cobertura periodística de la emigración reciente de argentinos posterior a la crisis de 2001, el momento de la agudización y el cambio con respecto a la presencia del fenómeno hacia 2003 y 2004. Se distingue la forma en que los diarios describen al argentino emigrado con respecto al pasado migrante, una proliferación de historias de vida y a su lugar como sujeto político y destinatario de derechos. En virtud de estos planteos nos parece importante poner en tensión y comparar la presentación del migrante latinoamericano y asiático y la del emigrante argentino, para poder reflexionar sobre las categorías, temas y estrategias asociativas que se tejen en la red de significados que construyen los diarios. This thesis object is to do research on the different ways of appearance of the migrant in three Argentinean newspapers (La Nación, Clarín y Página/12), during the years 1999-2007. Our research is focalized on which the associative strategies, image and naming used around the migratory subject, in a context of significant events and economic, politic and social changes are. We considered the journalistic article characteristics as a peculiar connection between discourse and ideology. These are set up as “textual packages”, products of a certain production, distribution and consumption model. We understand that written word is power and therefore it possesses as much as a performative nature as the possibility of imposing an event view that closes and block alternative answers. Previous academic research on this subject, focused on the 90’s, has shown an association between migrants and misappropriation, tax evasion, crime, as well as a failure to abide by the rules and customs of the Argentine people as a welcome society. This paper’s originality lies in contributing to the studies that place the media role in the prejudice and stereotype shaping. The main supply for the integration of social representation, categorization, perception and even sensation bias built on the “other” is found by the identity configuration of “us”. In accordance with the research, we consider that the discriminatory discourse was present during the studied period, although in a more subtle way than the exhibited in the 90’s. The first selected issue deals with the treatment given by the mentioned newspapers to Latin-American and Asian migration in Argentina. We emphasize in the media coverage of three events, the year 2000 attack and torture of Bolivian farmers, the 2006 fire in a Flores borough illegal plant where six people died, and the so called “Chinese supermarket boycott” in the same year. Amongst these events, discourse set ups that group the migrants in static and stigmatizing economic, labor, region, illegality, association way and identity group categories are found. The newspapers search for recurrence of the past European migration in the beginning and the middle of the twentieth century, as well as the different way of naming, quantitative data, and description that helps positioning migrants in a standardized and standarazing discursive place just to configure and to outline the image of this subject. The second studied issue is focalized in the coverage that the media gave to recent Argentine “emigration” that took place after the 2001 crisis, the worsening moment and the change affecting this event between 2003 and 2004. The way newspapers describe the Argentine emigrant regarding their emigrant past, their life stories and their place as a political subject and rights bearer is outlined. According to this approach, we consider of importance to put in tension and to compare the description of Latin-American and Asian migrants and the Argentine emigrant, so to be able to reflect about the categories, subjects and associative strategies that newspapers set up in their meaning trap.
