Por medio de las representaciones, entendidas como creencias, imágenes etc. el hombre conoce y construye el mundo. Ellas están “allí” antes de que el hombre advenga; sin embargo, con su accionar las modifica en un juego dialéctico para significar los viejos y los nuevos eventos que acontecen a lo largo del curso de su vida. En este devenir existencial, el hombre envejece. El envejecimiento es un proceso que afecta potencialmente a todos los seres humanos ya que, por el sólo hecho de vivir, envejeceremos. Este es un proceso que se encuentra insertado en un contexto social que es el que le da sentido; de tal manera que es de interés sociológico el análisis y el conocimiento de los diversos contextos sociales en donde el proceso de envejecimiento, tanto biológico como social, se desarrolla. La Argentina es un país pluriétnico ya que habitan en su territorio específicas culturas aborígenes. Esta es una característica que recientemente es considerada en el derecho constitucional en donde se reconoce su preexistencia a la formación del Estado Nacional. Muchas de estas personas, por diversos motivos en donde el económico es el más importante, toman la decisión de migrar de su lugar de origen. Este hecho impacta en su sistema representacional que debe ser modificado para significar los nuevos eventos que deberán enfrentar en el nuevo lugar, en este caso, la ciudad moderna. La plasticidad y la ambigüedad que portan las representaciones posibilitan que los migrantes signifiquen eficazmente los acontecimientos que se le presentarán en su cotidianeidad y encuentren los cauces y las formas para desarrollar su vida en su nuevo contexto residencial sin perder toda su identidad sino transformándola. Esta Tesis estudia las representaciones sobre la vejez de una comunidad Qom que habita el conurbano bonaerense y se enmarca dentro del campo académico definido por la Sociología del Envejecimiento, y si bien comparte su objeto de estudio con otras disciplinas como la Etnogerontología, propone una mirada inspirada en la tradición sociológica propiamente dicha beneficiándose de todas la miradas que confluyen en su objeto de estudio.
