Siglo XXI Description An account of the resource Los debates en torno al concepto de capital social en el campo de estudios de estratificación social y análisis de clase han tomado impulso en los últimos años. Estos estudios se han enfocado en determinar si el acceso a recursos insertos en redes sociales representa un factor que favorece la movilidad social ascendente o constituye un mecanismo de reproducción de las desigualdades de clase social. En este marco, este trabajo analiza la influencia del capital social en los procesos de movilidad social en el Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires en el siglo XXI. Específicamente, se indaga sobre su acceso desigual según clase social, su movilización para el acceso al empleo y su influencia en los procesos de reproducción y movilidad de clase. Para ello, se define al capital social como recursos insertos en una estructura social a los cuales los individuos acceden y movilizan en acciones con un propósito determinado y se utiliza al generador de posiciones como instrumento de medición. Se llevó adelante un diseño metodológico cuantitativo basado en el análisis estadístico de microdatos provenientes de la encuesta Reproducción y movilidad social en trayectorias familiares y cursos de vidas (Pi-Clases, 2016). El primer hallazgo es la existencia de desigualdades de acceso al capital social según clase social; a mayor clase social más es el capital social accedido. Al analizar las diferencias entre personas con distintas trayectorias se observó que quienes son intergeneracionalmente estables en la clase de servicios tienen mayor promedio de capial social accedido, pero quienes tienen trayectorias intergeneracionales de ascenso tienen redes más diversas en términos de clase social. Además, se destaca la importancia de los lazos sociales como mecanismo de acceso al empleo para todas las clases sociales. Los lazos familiares y barriales son fundamentales para la clase obrera, aunque el uso de estos lazos se asocia mayormente al trabajo informal, especialmente en el estrato no calificado. A su vez, los lazos familiares son fundamentales para la reproducción intergeneracional de la clase intermedia y la clase de servicios. Finalmente, el capital social cumple un papel importante como mediador entre orígenes y destinos sociales. El uso de lazos familiares para acceder al empleo favorece la reproducción de la posición social de origen, en cambio, utilizar los lazos de amistad o conocidos favorece procesos de logro de estatus, disminuyendo sustancialmente el peso de los orígenes sociales. Debates regarding the concept of social capital in the field of social stratification and class analysis have gained momentum in the last years. These studies have focused on determining if the access to resources embedded in social networks represent a factor that favours upward social mobility or constitutes a mechanism for the reproduction of class inequalities. This thesis analizes the influence of social capital in the processes of social mobility in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires in the 21st century. Specifically, inquiring about it´s unequal Access by social class, it´s mobilization for job access and it´s influence in processes of class mobility and reproduction. To this end, social capital is defined as resources embedded in a social structure which individuals access and mobilize in actions with a determinated purpose and the position generator will be used to measure. A quantitative approach was used, based on the statisticall analysis of microdata from the Reproduction and social mobility in family trayectories and life courses survey (Pi-Clases, 2016). The first finding is the existence of inequalities of access to social capital by social class; higher classes have more social capital. Regarding class trajectories, people that are intergenerationally stable in the service class have a higher mean status of contacts but the upwardly mobile have more diverse networks. Also, social ties are a key mechanism to access jobs for all social classes. Family and neighbourhood ties are key for the working class, though the use of these ties is linked to unregulated employenment. Family ties are also important for the intergenerational reproduction in the middle and service class. Finally, social capital has an important role as a mediatior between social origins and destinations. The use of family ties to access jobs favours the reproduction of class origins but the use of weaker ties favours status attainment processes, diminishing the weight of social origins substantially.
