La tesis expondrá que las estrategias definidas por los tres países con la finalidad de salvaguardar su integridad, están directamente relacionadas con las diferentes amenazas percibidas, que a su vez, se encuentran estrechamente ligadas a los conflictos que subsisten en la región, fundamentalmente entre Armenia y Azerbaiyán, y entre Rusia y Georgia. En virtud de ello, Armenia ha adoptado una estrategia de plegamiento con Rusia; mientras que Georgia, ha procurado balancear en contra de Rusia acercándose a la Alianza Occidental; en tanto que Azerbaiyán ha logrado un nivel de asociación con Occidente -a través de la provisión de energía y de los negocios asociados a su exploración/explotación y transmisión-, que le habría permitido adoptar una actitud de free rider (beneficiario gratuito), ya que parecería estar convencida de que – llegado el caso-, otros Estados podrán asumir el costo de su defensa. This research main purpose is to establish which are the factors that have induced the three South Caucasus´ countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) to opt for different strategies of international insertion, after having gained their independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union (in the period that goes between 1991 and 2016). This dissertation will expose that the strategies decided by this three countries with the intention of safeguarding their integrities, are directly related to the different threats perceived, which at the same time, are directly related to the conflicts still present in the region, fundamentally between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and between Russia and Georgia. On account of which, Armenia has adopted a strategy of bandwagoning with Russia; meanwhile, Georgia has tried to balance against Russia by drawing closer to the Western Alliance; while Azerbaijan has managed to establish a level of association with the West –by means of energy provision and businesses associated with its exploration/exploitation and delivery- that has allowed it to assume a free rider´s attitude, seeming convinced that –in case of need-, other States would shoulder the cost of its defense.
