Su trascendencia ha sido valorada por la crítica como radicalmente influyente en el cine moderno y es indispensable su conocimiento en cualquier aproximación al realismo, sea en forma periodística o teórica. Nuestro interés por volver a recorrerlo se centra en esta cuestión: la construcción de un efecto de realidad que rompe con las modalidades de representación previas y expande su influencia en la cinematografía posterior. Para avanzar en la comprensión de este proceso de transformación nos proponemos estudiar aspectos de la obra de uno de los directores emblemáticos de esta corriente: Roberto Rossellini. De su extensa obra recortamos tres filmes que la crítica y la teoría consideran sin dudas exponentes emblemáticos del Neorrealismo. Dentro de ellos acotamos la escenificación de una temática particular: la forma en que se presenta la muerte dentro de la trilogía de films más conocida de este realizador en que se narran episodios del final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la posguerra y sus consecuencias. A partir del análisis de estas secuencias, muchas de ellas emblemáticas en relación con la estética neorrealista, queremos describir el modo en que se construyó un nuevo tipo de realismo dentro del ámbito de la cinematografía.
