Abstract
This dissertation examines the configuration of non-reproductive trajectories of heterosexual male and female residents of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) in today's society. These trajectories reflect the decisions and course of action taken in terms contraception and elective abortion, in which various facilitating and obstructing factors are present: regulations, access to healthcare, availability of information and networks, financial condition, couple relationships, family situation and advances in science and technology. I particularly analyze the changes and continuities in non-reproduction from processes of individualization, detraditionalisation and scientific-technological development in the "world risk society" (Beck, 2008; Giddens, 2003). As to discipline, it is inserted in the field of sociology, taking as a general framework the theory of "world risk society" (Beck, 2008) in order to understand the changes in relationships, friendship, families and sexuality imprinted in non-reproduction (Giddens, 2003; Beck and Beck-Gernsheim, 2001). As to concepts, I use approaches from the fields of healthcare and sexual, reproductive and non-reproductive rights, considering the various standpoints from which they have been tackled: legal (Faúndes and Barzelatto, 2005; Bergallo, 2010/2012); subjective issues and decision-making (Rosenberg, 2002; Pecheny, 2005; Ouvinha Peres and Heilborn, 2002; Chaneton and Vacarezza, 2011); healthcare institutions-related (Zamberlin, 2005; Checa, 2006), from a bioethical point of view (Luna and Salles, 1995; Luna et al. 2006); philosophical (Klein, 2005); public opinion (Petracci, 2004/2011); and as to context, I include the regulatory and programatic history of contraception and abortion in our country, in coordination with the international scenario (Petracci, 2011); Petracci and Ramos, 2006; Petracci and Pecheny, 2007/2010). The research question was: How are non-reproductive trajectories of heterosexual male and female residents conformed in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) in today's society? The following issues were analyzed: How are nonreproductive decisions made? On what grounds? Which factors contribute to the election of contraceptive methods and procedures to terminate a pregnancy? How is scientific and technological development considered in non-reproductive trajectories? Which were the changes and continuities in non-reproduction? The main objective was to know and understand the configuration of contraceptive trajectories and circumstances for elective pregnancy in the light of scientific and technological advances in heterosexual female and male residents of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. Two age groups (aged 18 to 27, and 40 to 49) were compared on the assumption that the adult group underwent part of their nonreproductive trajectories still under the parameters of an industrial society, whereas the youngsters started theirs under a world risk society, with a different socioeducational background (considering belonging to "lower sectors" those interviewees not being able to complete secondary education; and to "middle sectors" those who completed secondary education and pursued higher studies.) All interviewees terminated at least one pregnancy. (...)
