Abstract

This Magister Thesis presents the results of research on the process of reception of the works of Hannah Arendt in Argentina between the intellectual interventions and readings during the period 1942 to 2000.

After a general Introduction to the problem, Chapter II presents the theoretical and methodological approach to the corpus as well as issues relating to the transdisciplinary approach. It addresses the debates on the relationship between text and context in studies of reception of ideas and authors, from the historical semantic and hermeneutical interpretation perspectives. Moreover, we develop a state of the art with the most significant antecedents to these studies in Latin America and Argentina. Based on the idea that the heterogeneity affects both the texts received (in terms of temporality and spatiality) and the texts of reception, it recovers those formulations that problematize the ideas of transculturation and influence which have traditionally affected the relationship between cultures. Finally, taking some classic concepts of the sociology of culture and cultural history –elective affinities and reading practices–, it presents the central elements of the methodological approach and the analytic periodization established.

From Chapter III –«Exile and Emigration: Words of a German-Jewish thinker (1942-1962) »– begins the analysis of the intellectual reading practices of the works of Hannah Arendt. This chapter is organized into four sections which explore the first translations and editions of articles and excerpts from her works, both in the original publication languages (German and English) and translated into Spanish. These readings open a local receiver space which ranges from political-cultural publications of various organizations and personalities of Jewish culture, groups of anti-Nazis German refugees, and Latin-Americans journalism enthusiast of German culture.

Chapter IV –«Excerpts, forgetfulness and posthumous fame (1963-1985) »– presents the period of reconfiguration of these reception. It ranges from first interpretations, from the Third World sectors of the early 1960s, to cultural and political neglect of the early dissemination of the works Arendt by the end of the last military dictatorship in our country.

Chapter V –«Elective Affinities at the post-dictatorship (1986-2000) »– addresses the interpretive readings, creative uses and appropriations of various aspects of Arendt's works. Certain elective affinities results from the configuration of five main axes of the local interpretation of works by some contemporary Argentine intellectuals and academics: the relationship between democracy and human rights after state terrorism; the configuration of the judiciary scene as a paradigm of public deliberation; reflections on responsibility and punishment of state terrorism crimes; the articulation of public and private spaces in the neoliberal context; and some critical reflections on politics and violence nexus from the 1960–1970 decades.

Finally, after a Conclusion that retrieves the central findings, it displays a Bibliography and two Annexes. Annex I details the translations made in Argentine emphasizing the importance of the pioneering work of argentine translators, publishers, cultural and academic journals for the dissemination of Arendt literature into Spanish. Annex II gives the original versions of articles published into German in Argentina, which had not been translated into Spanish before 2000.
