Abstract

In this doctoral dissertation we studied the profile of the education received by economists in Argentina between 1948 and 1966. To that effect, we studied curricular changes in economics syllabus at four of the most important Argentine universities: the National Universities of Buenos Aires (UBA), La Plata (UNLP) and del Sur (UNS) and the Catholic University (UCA). The starting point is a synthesis of the information available on economics education in Argentina before the official establishment of the first economics program in 1948. There have been several recent studies on the role of economists, however, few of them have shown much interest in the pre-1966 period, generally focusing on the period after the 1970s. This research is based on archive work and personal interviews that help to understand the political, economic and university education contexts. A guiding hypothesis for this research is that economist education in Argentina centered on public policy for economic development, beyond the State’s political orientation in each period.
