Abstract
The thesis analyzed the trends and determinants of the consumption of alcoholic beverages, binge drinking and marijuana in adolescent students in Argentina, according to the information provided by national studies on the consumption of psychoactive substances in this population, in the period 2005 to 2011.
Therefore, the proposed analysis required a detailed reference to the data sources and the underlying epistemology in these epidemiological studies, that is, how it defines the object of knowledge and how the way of knowing it is proposed. In this framework, the variables or conditions that are associated with and explain the consumption of sychoactive substances acquire relevance, and the reference to the greater or lesser robability of the occurrence of consumption is the most used expression when providing an understanding or explanation of it. These eterminants are risk and protection factors, and refer to the personal, family, school, environment, peer group and attitudes and perceptions about the use of psychoactive substances and are presented operationalized in questions of the questionnaire of the national studies.
They are protocolized at the international level, which allows the regional comparison of the main indicators and the contribution to hemispheric diagnoses.
On the other hand, maintaining a gender perspective meant connoting the meaning of the sex variable in its male and female categories, available in the survey, and reflecting on what it means to think about gender in the design of questionnaires for the collection of statistical information. From the gender perspective, the thesis questions were ormulated on whether there were differences according to gender in the changes in consumption levels and consumption patterns in the period under study, and if the determinants had a different impact depending on whether they are male or female students, what are the specificities of each and what are the similarities.
To answer these questions, a multivariate logistic regression model was designed, with 21 variables or factors, comparable in 2005 and 2011, plus three exclusives from 2011, but relevant because they refer to consumption in the environment. This model was applied to six population subgroups, according to gender and age, to make the impact of each factor observable, together with the rest of the conditions, on alcohol consumption, binge drinking and marijuana use in male students and women, who are in the eighth, tenth and twelfth year of high school, which is equivalent to considering the three relevant age groups: 14 and under, 15 and 16 years old, and 17 and over. It was the best way to evaluate, in a context of interaction of various risk and protective factors, their impact on the use of psychoactive substances.
In this analytical process, a critical and attentive look was held on the variables available for analysis, on their relevance in relation to the dimension of risk that it seeks to measure, as well as on the way in which the questions were written and their response categories thought out in the questionnaire. This second-order analysis allowed me to raise some considerations and proposals for modifying the questionnaire, to improve its quality and potential, while I value the continuity of these studies within the framework of an integrated national system of indicators on the drug problem in the country and the region. The thesis highlights the importance of design as a key moment, both at the beginning of the process, when defining the size and type of the sample and the questionnaire to be used, and at the final analytical moment, when deciding on a rading plan for the data available. Additionally, the incorporation of a new question is proposed to register gender, to overcome the current binary matrix.
The results of the empirical analysis raise new questions and some certainties. The period clearly shows an important change in the consumption of female students, especially in the consumption of alcohol and in the binge drinking, which by 2011 is presented as a practice in which, men and women smooth their differences of genre. It was also possible to identify the specificities according to gender and it was important to verify that there are differences in the conditions that impact on the use of psychoactive substances more linked to the age of the students than to gender. Finally, the analysis carried out confirms the importance of the adult world, in favoring or not the early consumption of psychoactive substances, observed from the conditions that efer to the care and containment of parents, and the role that the school plays as a space where indicators of deteriorating conditions appear early in the lives of adolescents. The peer group, the ideas regarding the risk associated with consumption and accessibility are aspects to be highlighted and that, as proposed, it is necessary to improve and deepen their investigation in this type of study.
