Abstract

What is known about sexual violence against children and adolescents? Which topics are being investigated and how? These questions guided this review of academic papers on this issue, with the aim of articulating expertise and thus contributing with strategies of prevention, assistance and protection of children and adolescents’ rights.

The review we present brings up a very diverse set of data and analysis from different disciplinary fields. To facilitate the presentation of previous investigations on sexual violence against children and adolescents, we decided to group them into three approaches, with the aim of placing them in their corresponding theoretical-methodological traditions: the epidemiological approach, from which the magnitude of the problem can be measured; the therapeutic approach, which places the study of the dynamics of violence, the effects on victims and the recovery processes of victims as its main interests; and the anthropological approach, which reconstructs the meanings which are at stake in institutional practices around the protection of rights, and examines the emergence and transformation of central categories in the current conception of the problem.

We consider that the institutional axis is presented as transversal to the three approaches, from which it is possible to illuminate complementary aspects and aspire to their articulation in order to contribute to improve the mechanisms of protection of children and adolescents’ rights and strategies of prevention and assistance against sexual violence.
