Abstract

Within a context in which discussions about the memory of the last military dictatorship have gained considerable relevance in Argentina, this dissertation intends to look into multiple existent strategies regarding the inscriptions and visibility of those mentioned memories in the public space through new forms of expression that include an aesthetic dimension to represent the recent past.

Firstly, I study in this work urban marks (such as the Memory Park, the former ESMA -Navy School of Mechanics- and other ways of inscription of the memory in the neighborhoods), as places that are both material and symbolically featured with that common past. They shape a distinguished map of the city.

Secondly, I study the visual arts (cinema, paintings, photography) that are considered by young artists as privileged ways to convert public memories into private ones. Around these interventions, due to a particular temporal configuration, struggles on the meaning of the past are produced and a new scenario is built where individual and collective components are merged and can be no longer distinguished.

The urban marks and the works of art that make up the corpus are analyzed according to their narrative dimension, with a main focus set on the visual aspect, where issues such as the relation between memory and experience and the unavoidable inauthenticity of representation are combined.

The analysis of this interventions is based on: works of art, field records, documents, critical texts, debates, photographs, from a multidisciplinary perspective, that articulates different theoretical-methodological approaches from sociology, sociosemiotics, discourse theories and ethnography.
