Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the processes of cultural circulation. The motorbike boys of the Metropolitan area of Buenos Aires were held as the analysis unit of the thesis, having being put on stage by the mass culture devices in Argentina in December 2001. The research has focused on the everyday practices of the motorbike boys, as well on the media representations which put them on circulation, and particularly on the overlapping between both. In order to rebuild both the motorbike boys’ native senses and the cultural series in which the media included their performance in December 2001, several methodological tools were used.

Thus, while the ethnographical approach let me spot their work beginnings in 1990, the context, the hierarchies, and the practical sense of their everyday practices, it also put forward new questions about the building-up of a style of living and particularly the ways communicating that style can be compatible with exceptional political contexts. On the other hand, the textual analysis made possible to identify the historical and cultural series to which they were linked. Finally the overlapping between practices and representations in the present have been lightened by putting these two zones together, which, simultaneously, addressed the thesis to a revision of an analytical difference between ‘politicity’ and political action.

Summing up, the research intends to make a contribution for a more accurate comprehension of the social mechanisms through which particular practices are qualified; how and why they come in to extended circuits of representation; and how and why they activate public recognition processes. The research also intends to rebuild the impact of these representations on the group identity elaboration
