Abstract
The visibility of discriminatory practices in soccer stadiums and the legitimation made by the people involved, indicate the existence of stereotypes and prejudices deeply rooted and naturalized. However the relationship between stereotype, prejudice and discrimination should not be considered as a linear relationship. First of all it is necessary to adopt an anthropological approach, based on an epistemological break, which raises that, any violence, either physical or verbal, is violence. This thesis contributes to the distortion of these practices and representations historically incorporated that comprise a logic which configures the adversary as an enemy, a logic that is widespread among the different players involved in soccer environment.
In this thesis I propose to make an analysis of representations about the otherness that is present in the Argentine chants, focusing on the existential level -individuality, gender, age- and the social axis -ethnic, territorial and class-. I consider the "aliento" as a cultural phenomenon of agonistic nature that constitutes a verbal challenge and a body practice that both look to visualize an idealized image of the group itself. Social representations about “us” and “others” are staged in this songs and are constructed from a dichotomous and exclusive logic of representation.
Supporters do not recognize the discriminatory nature of the insults because the affronts in general are part of the performance and their interpretation are based on the dichotomous logic of the "aliento". Thus, for the supporters, this insults are not serious and are part of the "folklore" of soccer. The chants that are sung in stadiums constitute social stories about social issues that have the advantage of being in a space of no censorship where the insults are legitimated.
The analysis of the content allows the access to a number of meanings of the Argentine society. In this way, my research is focus on the study of the logic of the cultural phenomenon of the "aliento" and its articulation with social, historical and cultural processes of our society.
