Abstract
This study tries to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge on the forms of integration that emerge through the socio-cultural practices of regional tourists in the area of the city of Buenos Aires. It commences from the assumption that tourism plays an integrating role, as recognised by international organisations and regional blocs such as Mercosur, and tests such socio-cultural integration from a micro-social and qualitative standpoint.
To these ends, the study develops indicators to enable the measurement of the levels of integration that occur through tourism practices, taking into account the relationships and integration that tourists reveal through their experiences during their stays, trips, and ways of discovering and connecting with the place visited.
The study involves two main areas of analysis, specifically the different forms of tourism practised and nationality profiles, the aim being to diagnose variability in terms of interaction and acquaintance with the local culture occurring in different forms of tourism experiences undertaken by tourists from Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile.
Through an analysis of the dynamics of interaction and significance, the study demonstrates the varying scale of the levels of integration that come into play when considering tourism as an international phenomenon and social practice demarcated in a determined space and involving multiple actors and interests, such as the market, different forms of mobility, motivational, professional and vocational aspects and relationships among forms of practice, which reach beyond the traditional, predictable paradigm associated with the denomination of “tourism”.
The study addresses integration from the standpoint of the subjects that embody the different activities in the complex web of tourism as well as based on the structure present in the tourist industry and the ways of getting to know the city that correspond to the different categories of tourists developed in the study, the aim being to explain the different levels of integration produced by the various actors involved.
Principal findings include an explanation of the varying magnitudes of integration that arise through different forms of tourism, as well as the determining causal factors relating to the subjective framework of experiences and significances.
The roles of specific actors and interests are revealed in terms of their impact and their tendency to either foster scenarios of integration or, conversely, hinder the formation of connections, relationships and a genuine discovery of the destination visited.
The study also identifies points of conflict between theoretical concepts and the empirical evidence on integration, as well as contradictions between assumptions and accepted premises, what can be observed globally, and the actual practices of regional tourists in the city of Buenos Aires, a relevant destination in Argentina, and a hub for the mobility and circulation of tourists.
