Abstract
In different historic and theoretical contexts, there were diverse approaches to political discourse. At certain times, there was an emphasis in the polemical dimension of this discourse, or in its ideological function, in the shaping form of the rhetoric, in the dispositive of enunciation or in the role of myths; to mention same classic examples, some of them with resonance in regional context. The thesis look at the contributions of “narrative turn”, poststructuralism, and of studies of populism in contemporary political theory, focusing in storytelling, like a multiple and omnipresent operation relative to political discourse. The research seeks to stand out how this operation works at the rhythm of the ongoing of political process. Thesis do that working on particular case: the experience of Kirchner governments between 2003 y 2015, in Argentina.
To develop this study, it was elaborated a framework that integrates diverse schools of thought: structural and post structural theories, contributions from narratology and narrative theory, as well as theories and methods of future studies. Inspired by a deconstructive method of future studies, called Causal Layered Analysis (CLA) (Inayatullah, 1998), and developing an adaptation of it, four layers of narrative analysis were stablished: 1) the sequence and its implicit causality; 2) Chronotope; 3) Myths and 4) Narrative voices, each one with its own narratological emphasis.
The analysis identified in kirchnerism three dominant Chronotopes, which structured narratively this discourse: Chronotope of the Peronist activist, Chronotope of Bicentenary and Chronotope of governance project. The first one is focused in leader´s identities; the send one is built on a commemorative opportunity, and structured by a principal antagonism (with agricultural sector); and the third one is deployed departing from the needs and challenges of governance. Integrated analysis of them, shows the way in which narrative logics are involved in discursive and political practice, showing also a populist mode of conceive the developing of the story, and the populist way to star it, and to dramatize it. Based on a work of theoretical discussion and on case study, the research proposes the following hypothesis: that populist discourse has a dominant chronotope, that verse of temporalization and a spatialization of power, and of the construction of antagonist motives. In addition, sometimes, when a decisional leadership is formed, the story of the leader´s life and their personality traits, turn also as a dominant chronotope of populist plot.
Beyond this systematic analysis of narrative and populist discourse, the research aims to contribute to the area of populism studies, adding a look at other theoretical traditions and integrations. It may allow us to further developing on some topics that are steel open in this research area, for example the construction of antagonism, the question of leadership and the function of representation between leader and people. The research also seeks to do a specific contribution to Latin American social sciences, with an introduction in this field of philosophical and practice approach of future studies theories and methods.
