Abstract
A complete understanding of the functioning of the labor market and the dynamics of household welfare requires complementing static analysis with the study of occupational dynamics of individuals. Labor mobility patterns that occur in each historical moment are not determined just by demographic attributes of individuals but also by some structural features of the labor market, the economic situation by which it goes through and the characteristics of the institutions labor among other factors.
The analysis of occupational mobility is relevant as it allows identifying changes in people’s employment situation, such as passages between jobs, exits to unemployment or to inactivity, while it allows observing the impact it may cause on the worker’s life and households.
This study focuses on the analysis of the first decade of the century characterized as a period of economic growth accompanied by improvements in the labor market and the recovery of some labor institutions. It particularly examines the probability of leaving an occupation according to different characteristics of people and jobs, considering the output to unemployment and inactivity, focusing on youth and women as a vulnerable group in the
labor market.
Based on different research, it can be said that that young people and women are at a disadvantage in the labor market not only in terms of their work expectations, but also
presenting higher risk of leaving occupation in comparison to other groups of workers, mainly as a result of different type of jobs they access, a situation that will persists even in economic growth cycles.
The actual study is a quantitative analysis making use of the Encuesta Permanente de Hogares (EPH) surveyed by the Instituto de Estadísticas y Censos (INDEC), as the main source of information. For this reason, quarterly panel data have been constructed, ranging from the third quarter of 2003 to the fourth quarter of 2010.
