Abstract
This thesis compares how peoples’ lives changed and/or were transformed in two communities after the arrival of democracy in 1990. Discussed here are two popular barrios, La Victoria and Villa Francia. These two barrios are located on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile. Both barrios are historically well known for their strong community involvement and organization, and also their strong voice to express their political beliefs during the Popular Unity period. They were both involved against Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in the 1980’s. The research presented here studies how these two communities were created and how they function today. The research focuses on their social makeup and/or community involvement after the return of democracy in Chile. During this democratic period, social-cultural networks in both communities were weakened by the following: the physical deterioration of public meeting spaces where people historically met. This thesis presents simultaneous factors involved that explain why community involvement and organization were adversely affected. First, these communities were weakened because of long-term, continuous national government assistance created during the dictatorship, which damaged community organization in both barrios. Second, financial and political support decreased on behalf of international non-governmental Organizations (NGO’s) that historically helped these communities. Third, leftwinged parties decreased their presence and support in these barrios due to the crumbling of “real socialism”. Lastly, the Catholic Church changed its political support in these two communities. This thesis explores the role of social memory/remembrance in order to reconstruct social ties and/or networks in these two communities. This social remembrance is used as a tool to understand current social problems in these two communities. It can be used to regain strong historical community ties in both Villa Francia and La Victoria, making each of these communities more aware of their strong historical roots. This can empower future generations so they can regain their lost community identity, as places where human rights violations were voiced and commitment to the community were of utmost value.
