Abstract
In the last decades, some transformations are changing the dynamics of the educational institutions and questioning their performance. Different authors coincide in pointing that the secondary educational level is the most affected by the changes of context and mandates observed. In this sense, the present work asks about the meaning of the secondary level to the youths who attends that level, with the aim to demonstrate that if there is a public school of quality with committed teachers the questioning about the meaning of the secondary education cease being relevant. The research focused on a group of students of the first and the last years of the secondary school, who have chosen to do their studies in university public schools that preserve their prestige and academic excellence. The educational institutions chosen for the present work are the “Colegio Nacional” of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the “Escola de Aplicação” of the Faculty of Education of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The enquiry with the students of both institutions through interviews and surveys allowed exploring the meanings of their school experience, the roles assigned to the secondary level, the institutional aspects that generate adherences and critics, the links with the teachers and the future expectations, specifically the articulations between the secondary educational level and the superior one. In addition, the voices of principals and teachers of both institutions were incorporated, widening the perspective about the present-day students and their scholar experiences. The selection of Argentina and Brazil aims to move forward with the comparative study of present educational processes in developing countries, considering that the recent educational reforms emphasized that their historical process have shown some elements of convergence in some aspects of their educational systems. Approaching to secondary level students from Argentina and Brazil can provide an entrance door to the comprehension of their view about their present educational experience and their future perspectives.
