Abstract
In spite of the multiple changes that the television world is going through, telenovela continues to be one of the central genres in Latin America and, in particular, in Argentina. In this thesis I propose to examine the perception of viewers with a broad trajectory in the consumption of soap operas broadcast on Argentine television regarding the transformations experienced by the genre over time. For this, and taking into account both reception studies and those focused on the telenovela genre, I recover the term memory as a key concept, understanding it as a force of identity (Candau, 2008). If the link between memory and narration is essential to understand the relation of the viewers with the genre, this research is informed by the contributions of the qualitative methodology. The corpus is made up of material provided by 13 open and personal interviews.
In the research, I make a descriptive and explanatory account of the evolution of the telenovela genre on the Argentine television screen to understand and deepen the ways in which the espectators adopt, reject, accept, transgress and negotiate the meanings proposed there. In this regard, I maintain the following statement: the telenovela can provide security for the spectators to move in their daily lives and this emerges, on the one hand, from what the viewers remember but, on the other hand, the way in which it they do.
I also wonder about the viewers' perception of old and new forms of presentation of main and/or secondary figures in telenovelas and modes of identification.
Finally, I analyze how the contradictions of the time generate dichotomies in the viewers because they demand from the genre a quota of reality but, at the same time, they request - desperately - that it be (still is) a space of reverie.
