Abstract
The present Master’s Thesis tries to analyze in comparative perspective the different leaderships post presidential of the leaders of the 21st century located in South America. For this, it was chosen three leadership cases: Rafael Correa in Ecuador, Luiz Inácio, Lula da Silva in Brazil, and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in Argentina, they have been finalized their presidential terms but they continue participating on political issues in their countries.
Indeed, most of studies on presidential leadership have emphasized the rise and maintenance of leaders in the executive office, nevertheless, this Master’s Thesis thinks the issue of presidential leadership later the presidential mandate the same one that adapts to new scenarios using diverse resources -denominated for this investigation as resources of postpresidential power- with the intention to return to lead the political power.
In this context, Rafael Correa, who finished his presidential term in May 2017, participated in 2018 by the side of the opposition against a referendum made by Lenin Moreno; Inácio Lula da Silva, despite of having been sentenced to 12 years in prison in April 2018, presented his candidacy for the presidency of Brazil -for the third time-; Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, since 2019 serves as Vice-president of the Nation.
The present thesis reveals a phenomenon not studied the post-presidential leadership complementing at the same time the studies that carried out on the political leadership, opening a new way for investigation that contemplate the political influence of the post-presidential leaders in the South American democracies.
