Abstract

This research main purpose is to establish which are the factors that have induced the three South Caucasus´ countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) to opt for different strategies of international insertion, after having gained their independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union (in the period that goes between 1991 and 2016). This dissertation will expose that the strategies decided by this three countries with the intention of safeguarding their integrities, are directly related to the different threats perceived, which at the same time, are directly related to the conflicts still present in the region, fundamentally between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and between Russia and Georgia. On account of which, Armenia has adopted a strategy of bandwagoning with Russia; meanwhile, Georgia has tried to balance against Russia by drawing closer to the Western Alliance; while Azerbaijan has managed to establish a level of association with the West –by means of energy provision and businesses associated with its exploration/exploitation and delivery- that has allowed it to assume a free rider´s attitude, seeming convinced that –in case of need-, other States would shoulder the cost of its defense.
