Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to understand the configurations of meaning constructed by television viewers concerning their reception of television news. It is assumed that the public gives meaning to the moment of reception in terms of a place of meeting that enables ways of sociability and contact. For those that consider themselves as the audience of television newscasts, reception does not respond only to the possibility of learning about reality, but it also allows for the construction of and the participation in a media environment. There they meet with others with whom they form part of a community where they share common experiences, conceiving that they have a lot in common, and reinforcing a sense of belonging. All of this stems from the reception which they assume they are sharing with those they suppose are watching the same thing.
(…)
In order to address this problem we use the reception of the local television news program Telediario (Canal 13) as the object of our study given that since 1996 (according to Rusconi, Bosco and Milani, 2017), it has been the most watched program in the city of Rio Cuarto, Córdoba, where this research is based. By means of focused interviews with television viewers who consider themselves as regular viewers of this news program, we seek to understand the ways in which they construct their experience as viewers and the configurations of meaning in terms of the shared spaces, the ties, and the networks of relationships in which they are involved within this act of reception as well as the place the news program occupies in the map of their daily interactions.
