Abstract
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) introduce changes in the field of health (a phenomenon known as eHealth). Among them, those referring to the doctor-patient relationship (DPR) stand out. The research question proposed by this thesis is based on the interest in studying such changes in health and sexual rights. Its definition and approach is nourished by the conceptual contributions of the following theoretical perspectives: the gender and rights approach; the Communication and Health approach; and the Collective Health approach. The general objective of this work is to know and understand the changes introduced by the use of ICT in the care and attention of sexual health in the field of DPR from the perspective of health professionals of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), Argentina.
The methodological design is qualitative given the exploratory and descriptive nature of the research. The work sample is non-probabilistic and it is composed of professionals from the field of sexual health who work in the CABA healthcare network. The survey technique used is the semi-structured interview. The fieldwork was carried out between November 2019 and March 2020. The analysis comprises three levels of approximation to the perspective of professionals: social representations of eHealth, opinions, and perceptions about the changes introduced by ICT in the DPR. The qualitative approach of the analysis allows us to dig into the discourse of the interviewees and explore the meaning they assign to their practices.
The analysis of the social representations of eHealth concludes with a typology that lets us notice the descriptive and evaluative nature of the ideas, images and meanings that emerge from said representations. Likewise, the descriptive sense, predominant in social representations, becomes more complex when deepening the opinions and perceptions of health professionals about the changes introduced by ICT in the DPR. Then, ambivalent positions are expressed in terms of contradictions. While the availability of medical information online is considered risky for health and detrimental to the RMP by the interviewees, information related to sexual rights, on the other hand, is related to greater autonomy that is valued as something favorable (at least purposefully). Wrapping up, the challenges that digital health will face in the near future are raised from the articulation between research and social intervention.
