Abstract
This thesis mainly aims at a detailed analysis of the dynamics within base trade unions in Argentina. In that sense, we accomplished an inquiry around political life in these institutions. In turn, we are especially interested on examining the impact that the internal instance of base trade unions has on the external dimension (on union action in relation to other actors).
To carry out this work we have considered three case studies, which correspond to various internal structures of delegates from the Asociación Trabajadores del Estado, a union characterized by the presence of different political positions within it. The option has been for representative institutions of the different currents, with the purpose of evaluating, in turn, the influence of tradition in the internal policies and external action in those base entities. The period in which we focused our attention has been the one which began in 2002, with the devaluation of the national coin, and continues to these days; stage defined, especially in its early years, by the rise of labor conflict in the workplace.
To reach the proposed goal, we made a long fieldwork. So, in three different state workplaces, we formed discussion groups and we carried out detailed interviews to leaders, delegates, affiliates and workpeople in general. In turn, we collected and analyzed a vast and heterogeneous union documentation and journalistic information on the indicated period. Finally, the participant observation, carried out in different workplaces, was very helpful at the time of global interpretation of the obtained data.
Finally, with this thesis we seek, on one hand, to provide a new methodological approach for the study of trade unions and, on the other hand, offer a set of conceptual elements which allow inquiring about the role of the internal organization on these base institutions.
