Abstract
This paper problematizes the literary field in twentieth-century Ecuador, delving into its first decades and describing the facts and causes that led to the origin of that field. At first, two forces that converge in the dispute are shown: realism and fiction, with such relevant representatives as Joaquín Gallegos Lara and Pablo Palacio. In addition, a vital characteristic of the country's literary field at that time can be distinguished: its lack of autonomy, a substantial feature in the formation of the actors and their positions before art.
A second relevant stage in the literary field took place in the sixties and could be defined as a tzánzico moment, a point that shows the development of the literary field in the country during that period. This phase is the prelude to the attainment of autonomy in the literary field, especially because it begins a process of separation between politics and art. The impact of the literary boom was important in this process.
In the eighties and nineties, autonomy was achieved as a constituent part of the field, giving way to literary issues. This process, in the case of Ecuador, is amalgamated with novel movements, such as postmodernism, which appealed more to the cultural aspect and moved away from political or economic thought.
Under these conditions, it is possible to enter the works of three writers: Javier Vásconez, Huilo Ruales and Abdón Ubidia. Their works characterize the state of narrative in the eighties and nineties. The city and its dynamics are the most relevant aspects in the narrative of these three authors.
Finally, through these elements it is possible to understand the literary modernity of the country, a modernity marked by its marginality, not only geographically but also culturally. This aspect is relevant because it closes the analysis of the literary field in Ecuador in the twentieth century, especially focusing on the eighties and nineties.
