Abstract
This thesis analyses the reciprocal constitution processes between scientific knowledge, public issues and the state in the context of the socio-technical controversy surrounding the cyanide spill at the Veladero mine in San Juan. The controversy began with the mobilisation of sectors organised within the "Jáchal no se toca" (AJNST) Assembly against the Provincial Executive Power. During this period, various scientific and non-scientific stakeholders produced and publicly debated different technical reports on topics such as water pollution, environmental impacts and the control of mining operations, adopting divergent approaches and yielding contrasting results. A certain mode of public problematisation then took shape (Gusfield, 1981), which framed the controversy from the outset and subsequently underwent displacement and change. To analyse these changes, this paper begins with the historical background that made the conditions for mega-mining exploitation in San Juan possible until 2019.
