Abstract
In this thesis, we investigate the thought of three European counterrevolutionary authors of the first half of the 19th century (1789-1848): Edmund Burke (1729-1797), Joseph de Maistre (1753-1821) and Juan Donoso Cortés (1809-1853). Based on a research of their main works, we highlight the limitations of contemporary characterizations about conservative thought and we propose an alternative classification adjusted to the political origins of this current: the distinction between conservatism as a noun and conservatism as an adjective. Outlining this distinction, which functions as a working hypothesis, we demonstrate its heuristic capacity to conceptualize the conservatism of the chosen authors. We conclude by highlighting the advantages of the point of view proposed to define a current of political theory and its ability to extend to other authors, periods and currents.
