Abstract
The following thesis is a theoretical work that presents a systematic reconstruction of the concept of hegemony, showing its development throughout the works of Antonio Gramsci. In order to do so, this dissertation tracks the emergence of the concept in his pre-prison writings and analyzes its development in the Prison Notebooks, taking into account the diachronic dimension of its writing. In this way, I seek to bring forward the different forms of understanding hegemony that are constructed in Gramsci’s works. Following the hypothesis that there is not a single original meaning to be restored, throughout this work I approach hegemony in its polysemy, beyond authorial intentionality. Therefore, the reconstruction I undertake consists of an account of the forms of hegemony in its articulation through three conceptual constellations: first, in relation to ideology and culture; second, to the State; and third, to the historical forms of domination resulting from class struggle. In this way, I show the development of each of these forms in Gramsci's writings; then, against Gramsci, I underline certain problems that each of these meanings pose for marxist theory; and, finally, I return to certain critical reappropiations of hegemony beyond Gramsci’s work. In sum, the following thesis presents a critical interrogation of the concept of hegemony in dialogue with its main interpretations as a way of addressing the problem of a marxist political theory.
